Application examples of crystal filters in communication systems
1. Mobile communication system
In modern 4G/5G base stations, crystal filters are widely used in the radio frequency (RF) front-end and intermediate frequency (IF) processing. In the transmit chain, they filter out harmonics generated by the power amplifier, ensuring that the transmitted signal meets the spectrum mask requirements. In the receive chain, they suppress out-of-band interference and enhance receive sensitivity. Especially in massive MIMO systems, where each antenna element requires an independent filtering channel, the miniaturization advantage of crystal filters makes them an ideal choice.
2. Satellite communication equipment
Satellite repeaters utilize high-Q crystal filters to achieve strict channel division. Due to the limited power of satellites and the long transmission distance, any unnecessary signal leakage can reduce system capacity. Crystal filters ensure that upstream and downstream signals are strictly confined within the allocated frequency band, avoiding cross-interference. Furthermore, in VSAT terminals, crystal filters help suppress terrestrial interference, ensuring reliable reception of weak satellite signals.
3. Military communication system
Military communication systems require extremely high countermeasures and anti-interference capabilities. Frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) systems utilize rapidly tuning crystal filter banks to track frequency hops and simultaneously filter out enemy interference. Electronic warfare equipment relies on the precise frequency selection characteristics of crystal filters to identify and separate complex electromagnetic signals. These applications all demand filters with extremely fast response speeds and high stopband suppression ratios.
Technological development trend of crystal filters
To meet the demands for higher performance in modern communication systems, crystal filter technology continues to evolve:
1. Miniaturization: Ultra-small crystal filters manufactured using MEMS technology can be reduced in size to less than 1mm×1mm, making them suitable for integration into radio frequency system-in-package (SiP).
2. Broadbandization: Through multimode coupling technology and cascade design, the operating bandwidth of the new crystal filter has been extended to tens of MHz, while maintaining excellent selectivity.
3. Tunable: Tunable crystal filters with voltage control or temperature compensation, capable of adapting to the flexible frequency requirements of Software Defined Radio (SDR).
4. High-temperature stability: Utilizing crystals with special cutting angles and compensation circuits, the operating temperature range has been extended to -55°C to +125°C, meeting the requirements for applications in extreme environments.
